Nancy+Elliot: To Nnewi With Love

Let me start by asking that you do not forget to drop  your comments for this beautiful couple at the end of the post when you are done consuming this awesome photographs of her, her groom and this beautiful story.

I tell people I am a well travelled Nigerian and when I talk about my country, I can be considered an expert considering the fact that I have seen a lot of the innards of this beautiful country.

I have however, never been to Nnewi, a serene little city in Anambra state, Nigeria before. It is off the expressway that connects Owerri and Onitsha. Ifunanya who will be featured here soon as well. was going to be the first to take me to Nnewi but that is history. So when she demanded that I show up in Nnewi as Nancy’s traditional wedding photographer after she referred me to her, I had to choice. Now, this is a call to all Nnewi brides, please call me. I want to go back to that town.

Why? Nnewi people are a beautiful set of human beings. Humble, Polite, Courteous, Peace Loving, Beautiful, Industrious and  Rich ;). There are some huge achievements in this town. The only indigenous car assembly plant (Innoson) and the second biggest Cement producer ( Ibeto) in Nigeria are indigenes.

Nancy is an Nnewi person.  But add to the above a childlike beauty, a facial innocence and a mischievious playfulness and you will understand the kind of person I met when I saw Nancy looking out for me from the balcony of her dads beautiful country home.

This picture captures succinctly the person Nancy is. remember the way a child looks at you when she sees something interesting and peeks from the back of a covering object to observe? Look at the picture again.

Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-001-(Side-1)And this tells us the other side of her, the boisterousness.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-002-(Side-2)I had a great time shooting this wedding. Nancy, this is not flatter. Thank you for making Nnewi awesome. You were hospitable and fun to gist with.

I titled this photograph, When cooperation creates beauty. The hands are not one persons own but two people. Guess!

We started getting ready for this wedding as from about 11:30am in the morning. Being a traditional wedding, it usually begins later than white weddings do.
Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-003-(Side-3)Everybody was in the mood. Daughters made up mothers who did not want to be left out of the fray.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-004-(Side-4)The young ladies applied the beauty techniques they had learnt and used the materials they had acquired for this purpose, skillfully.
Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-005-(Side-5)The result of all the labour was the following.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-006-(Side-6) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-007-(Side-7) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-008-(Side-8) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-009-(Side-9)Every one was resplendent and the bride who was undergoing a transformation under the hands of Amaka looked unhurried as she was being unravelled. Brush stroke after brush stroke!  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-010-(Side-10)Nancy had a fine array of accessories for her wedding.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-011-(Side-11)But one of the best parts of this wedding was Nancy’s gele tying. The lady who did the tying is skilled. She masterfully showed us how skillful she was in her art.   Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-012-(Side-12)Behold our bride……..Nancy Ejike!  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-014-(Side-14) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-015-(Side-15) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-016-(Side-16) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-017-(Side-17) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-018-(Side-18)When Nancy came out the first time to greet everyone i just imagine what would have been been on Elliots mind.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-019-(Side-19) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-020-(Side-20) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-021-(Side-21)Do i still need to imagine? It is clear what was there……Damn! I got the right one.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-022-(Side-22) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-023-(Side-23) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-024-(Side-24)After the greetings, Nancy went to step into her second outfit of the day and I quickly identified the living room as having the best light in the house. Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-025-(Side-25)And the photographs started. One after another we produced greatly lit photographs.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-026-(Side-26) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-027-(Side-27) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-028-(Side-28) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-029-(Side-29) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-030-(Side-30) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-031-(Side-31)And we were aided by the beauty of these angels. They practically sparkled in front of the camera.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-032-(Side-32)But none could compete with the beauty of these two. The genes spoke loudly that beauty is DNA deep.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-033-(Side-33)This photograph is already trending on instagram as every account that posts about weddings struggle to show off the beauty that was captured here.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-034-(Side-34)When Nancy came out the second time, it was choose her groom amongst the men hustling to be “the one”.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-035-(Side-35) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-036-(Side-36) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-037-(Side-37)Chief Ibeto was the chairman of this occassion and such a humble man he seems to be.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-038-(Side-38)After collecting the glass of palm wine from Chief Ibeto, Nancy set out looking for the man who had captured her heart.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-039-(Side-39)And as  culture demands, she gave him glass of palm wine to drink from, signifying she had chosen him as the one she has agreed to marry.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-040-(Side-40) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-041-(Side-41)Elliot is a gentle giant. A little shy and uncomfortable in front of the camera but who cares? He was comfortable around Nancy and that was all that mattered. Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-042-(Side-42) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-043-(Side-43) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-044-(Side-44) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-045-(Side-45) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-046-(Side-46) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-047-(Side-47) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-048-(Side-48) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-049-(Side-49) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-050-(Side-50) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-051-(Side-51) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-052-(Side-52)It was dance on from this point as people celebrated the newly married couple with the raining of Naira notes on them. You could hear the pattering of the notes as they hit the ground.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-053-(Side-53)Of course no one was going to out do Chief himself, he flung the crisp NGN1000 notes around like they were face wipes.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-054-(Side-54)And Elliot, O Elliot, interesting dancer that he is quickly adopted the little moves he could quickly grasp and moved along to the sounds of shoki around him.  Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-055-(Side-55) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-056-(Side-56) Nancy-+-Elliot---Nigerian-Traditional-Wedding-057-(Side-57)I tell people i have the most satisfied life out here on planet earth.
