This is a production of the International Youth Fellowship performed in Lome, Togo that I photographed. It was acted out by a Chinese choral choir.
This was a beautiful production. I have tried to present it as cinematographically as possible. It spoke to me because I have only read this story in the bible before now and here it was being played out in front of my eyes so perfectly that the reality of the story line got me thinking.
The First Noel was performed at the Togolese parliament house opposite the tallest building in Togo, The Fevrier Sofitel hotel.
It was a huge crowd inside this hall waiting for the curtains to be raised. When the curtains where raised, we were not disappointed by these amazing musicians and singers. But I was mostly thrilled by the Xylophonist. After several wonderful renditions of popular Christmas carols, the curtains go down to screams and cheers. Next was the performance we were all waiting for. The First Noel.
As we wait, the hall goes dark and a sole light is lit, illuminating the lady who will conduct this performance.
As the barely discernible curtain was raised the quality of this performance comes to life.
A Narrator tells the story of the birth of Jesus.
He narrated this story so well, it came to life.
It was a normal day in Bethlehem. People went about their normal duties. Except for the fact that it was not a normal day. It was a day to be called Christmas. It was the day Jesus the Son of God was to be born.
As people began to settle in for the night a certain Joseph was just arriving in town with his wife from Nazareth.
and the arduous journey was already taking its toll on Mary. Her labour pains had started. Joseph had to quickly find a place for his wife to put to birth their first baby.
After gently setting his wife down, Mr Joseph started knocking on doors. Humans have not changed and a dust covered, weary looking carpenter was not the best site in the night. He was rejected and pushed violently away on a particular occassion. A woman finally finds him a place for his weary wife to give birth. A Manger.
And this lady unwrapped scene by scene from her advantaged position. Joseph wept at the prospect of it. Alone with his wife. I am sure he wondered what was going to be. Beaten, a desperate Joseph took his wife to the only place he could find around It was a dark night! It was a lonely cold night. And shepherds where out in the fields tending to their flocks. They were to witness the most amazing occurence yet seen my man. The night was transformed by shining light
and a choir of angels sang to them. It made me wonder if i was impressed with this Chinese choir, how beautiful the sound must have been to those poor shepherds. The shepherds hurried to greet this special baby. and announce his birth with the shofar. Next came in the wise men who presented gifts to the child I wish this performance will be reproduced one day in Nigeria.
This goes to say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year filled with love and heavenly interventions.
