I shot this wedding under very adverse conditions. Traditional weddings in this part of the country are done in the night and Ikom is a town on the thick belt of the rain forest of the South of Nigeria so rains are normal here.
IT RAINED AND IT WAS DARK!!!
This has to be one of my most exciting weddings till date. Exciting in that I had to go across the entire south of Nigeria to get to Ikom, a beautiful hilly town some 15 minutes away from the Camerounian border to shoot a wedding under the most challenging conditions I am yet to encounter and I conquered. Lots of beautiful scenery on the road, the road we went on had to go around the beautiful Cross Rivers National Park. It was a long journey, so long at a time even I had to drive to ease the stress from the young man on the wheels because, Kai!!! Ikom is FAR!!!!!!!!
I talked with Blessing some two months before her wedding and I thought this is the most quiet bride I have ever talked to. Her voice was a soothing lullaby on the phone. I was asking myself if it will be possible to bring out the playful part of this bride. YAY!!!! How wrong I was. “Had I known” as we say it in Nigeria
Blessing was a beautiful bride. She was naughty, mischievious, funny, playful, and above all a good person. It wasn’t far fetched as her family were such nice people, O! Those people in Ikom, they wanted to feed us to death.
Those pots are not what I ate alone o! ah! Those pots where the ones used to cook the wedding food. 😉
Meet Blessing in her quietness.
and meet her in her naughty by nature mood……The different faces of a wonderful woman.
When the makeup artist was done with her she was so radiant and beautiful, it hurt the eyes.
This is the woman to whom all the glory must be ascribed, part of which she bequeathed to Blessing.
Timothy, O! the lucky groom Timothy!! Check the meaning of the word amiable, that’s Timothy. Lovely parents he has. I rode with Timothy’s dad all the way to Ikom and wow, I must tell you I was intrigued. His sisters too where these very interesting (wink) people. Did I fall in love? See your mind working overtime.
As I shot Timothy, he fired back at me as well…………..:)
Soon it was time to go and face the business of the day!! Accompanied by his dad, Timothy was all smiles.
Here, the monies were being counted and items on the lists were being ticked off as the bride was slipping away from the grasps of her family into the arms of Timothy.
When the protocols had been observed, it was time for rejoicing as it dawned on Blessings mum that she was giving a daughter away in marriage.
Finally the handsome young man who had won the heart of this delectable princess was called to present himself and the bride was brought in as well to recognise, claim and possess her groom.
Eventually, it was food o clock, considering the intensive nature of the wranglings in this parts, you end up being famished and O boy!!! The food!!! THE FOOD!!!
As the bride was being prepared for her presentation to the entire village for once Blessing showed that something can get to her…………..This gele made her respect herself o!! Follow the story from here on, from the presentation of the bride to the groom to the beautiful dances of this people. Ikom was a beautiful experience.
